People often talk about artistic talent. Sometimes people call the others talented, and there is a certain doomed tone in their message. Talent is like that: you have it, or you don't. Leonardo could not just learn it, could he?
I understand talent as something that helps a person achieve success in art, music, literature, or something along these lines. Talent just makes producing good art easy for you. Talent is something that you're born with. And in this sense, talent does not exist.
When you see an awesome piece of art, please know that the artist achieved these heights through determination and hard work. Thinking it's not so simple? Well, it's not. There are many factors involved in success, such as the support or criticism you get, the resources you have available, or the education you receive, or even the image of yourself in society that you create. Dali, anyone? And this is not just about the technical skill of producing aesthetically pleasing pictures. Mindblowing ideas and concepts are coming to those who are trying to create something already, and who have tried out a variety of concepts. Coming up with things also is a kind of skill which needs to be developed with practice.
This means that anyone can achieve anything. If you spend lots of time doing something, the results will come, one way or another. If you are passionate and dedicated, you can make it, and no absence of talent can stop you.
When you are wondering why this photographer's pictures are better than yours, assuming that they simply have more talent is the easiest and the most unrealistic explanation. Would you be willing to get up at 4 am to catch the golden hour? But they would, and they do it regularly. Would you spend hours editing your pictures? They do it. Are you constantly upgrading your knowledge on new photography techniques? They certainly are. And finally, are you willing to invest in a bunch of equipment? Most of them do. Equipment is not the primary, but still important component of striking photography.
So, next time you think that this cool artist or musician is doing great art because they are naturally inclined to it, and it's easy for them... Think again. And appreciate the enormous amount of work put into their art. And yeah, I'm pretty sure that Leonardo just learned it.
